How Car Bumpers Are Recycled

Car bumpers are recycled in four steps. First, bumper covers are sorted and stripped of paint-incompatible contaminants, metal brackets, clips, and sensor housings. Second, the covers are shredded into flake. Third, the flake is ground into uniform regrind at our Ajax facility, and where a customer needs it, pelletized in Simcoe into a consistent feedstock. Finally, the recycled material goes back into production, often into new automotive parts, instead of landfill. Every load is documented, and where a recall or brand-protection job requires it, we destroy parts to ISO:14001 standards and issue a certificate of destruction.

What Are Bumpers Made Of?

Almost all modern bumper covers are plastic, not fiberglass: typically polypropylene (PP) or a thermoplastic olefin (TPO) blend, with some ABS and polycarbonate blends on older or specialty vehicles. A quick check: plastic bumpers flex under pressure and carry a moulded resin stamp on the inside face (look for PP, TPO, or ABS). Because PP and TPO are among the most recyclable resins on a factory floor, bumper covers are excellent candidates for recycling rather than disposal.

Do Old Bumpers Have Scrap Value?

Yes, in volume. Clean, sorted bumper plastic carries real value as regrind feedstock, and we pay rebates on qualifying loads. That means body shops, collision centres, and dealer groups with steady bumper volumes can turn a disposal cost into revenue. Value depends on resin type, contamination (paint systems matter), and volume, which is why every program starts with a free recycling audit. Have one bumper from a DIY repair? A single household bumper belongs at your municipal Community Recycling Centre; our service is built for commercial volumes.

Automotive Plastic Recycling Beyond Bumpers

Bumpers are the start, not the whole program. We recycle the full automotive plastic stream: fascias and trim, interior components, purgings and off-spec moulded parts, and packaging like totes and dunnage. One ISO:14001 certified partner, one pickup schedule, documented diversion reporting for the whole plant. Recalled or branded parts are handled with certified destruction under our manufacturing recall program.

How are car bumpers recycled?

Bumper covers are sorted, stripped of metal clips and contaminants, shredded, then ground into regrind or pelletized into feedstock. The recycled plastic goes back into manufacturing. Where required, parts are destroyed to ISO 14001 standards with a certificate of destruction.

What type of plastic are car bumpers made of?

Most modern bumper covers are polypropylene (PP) or thermoplastic olefin (TPO), with some ABS and polycarbonate blends. Check the moulded resin stamp on the inside face of the cover. Plastic bumpers flex under pressure; fiberglass is rigid and cracks.

Do plastic bumpers have scrap value?

Yes, in commercial volumes. Clean, sorted PP and TPO bumper plastic is valuable regrind feedstock, and Target Recycling pays rebates on qualifying loads from body shops, collision centres, and manufacturers.

Can I recycle a single bumper from my car?

Our programs are built for commercial volumes from body shops, dealers, and manufacturers. For a single household bumper, your municipal Community Recycling Centre is the right route, and disposal fees may apply.
